Aggression or violence towards those delivering public services is a problem which is getting worse.
UNISON defines violence at work as: “any incident in which an employee is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work”.
UNISON expects employers to put in place a basic level of monitoring, support, safeguards and training.
Most councils should already have policies for safeguarding and protecting employees. But these policies are not always reviewed and updated regularly enough, nor do they reflect changes in how staff now work.
